산지에서 자란다. 뿌리줄기는 짧고 줄기는 꽃이 진 다음 높이 15∼30cm에 달하며 끝에 잎자루가 거의 없는 1쌍의 잎이 마주나고 가운데에 잎자루가 긴 1개의 잎이 달린다. 잎은 원심형(圓心形)이며 길이는 2∼4.5cm, 나비 2.5∼6cm이며 둔한 톱니가 있다. 잎자루는 길이 7∼15cm이고 턱잎은 바소꼴이며 백색의 막질(膜質:얇은 종이처럼 반투명한 것)이다. 꽃줄기가 뿌리에서 나와 4∼5월에 자줏빛 꽃이 핀다.
꽃받침은 좁은 달걀모양이고 꽃잎은 길이 15mm이며 곁조각에 털이 있다. 꿀주머니는 원기둥 모양이고 5개의 수술과 1개의 암술 및 5개의 꽃받침이 있다. 과실은 삭과로 긴 달걀모양이다. 한국에는 금강산 이북지방에 널리 분포한다. 잎맥에 털이 있고 꿀주머니의 길이가 기본종의 1/2 정도인 것을 넓은제비꽃(var.brevicalcarata)이라고 하며 함경북도 갑산·만주·일본·시베리아·중앙아시아·유럽 등지에 분포한다.
